Pre-Launch (Product Development & MVP)
Self-Serve Flow Implementation
The founders of Stitch recognized that most developers prefer to try products without engaging with sales teams. To address this, they built a self-serve flow that allows users to quickly sign up and start using their authentication services. This approach not only opened up their product to a wider audience but also facilitated faster onboarding for potential enterprise clients. By enabling developers to test the product independently, they increased the likelihood of adoption and reduced the friction typically associated with enterprise sales.
Team Building Before Product Development
Before building their product, Julianna Lamb and her co-founder focused on hiring an early team. They believed that assembling a strong team would lead to a better product than if they had rushed to create something on their own. This strategy emphasized the importance of having a reliable product experience, especially when dealing with critical infrastructure. They raised a seed round and quickly hired engineers and designers to ensure they had the right talent in place before starting development.
Customer-Centric Feature Development
Stytch's founders, Julianna and Reid, initially focused on building a passwordless authentication solution, believing it to be the future of identity management. However, they received consistent feedback from potential customers expressing excitement about passwordless options but also inquiring about traditional password support. This led them to pivot and develop a password feature, recognizing that while many users preferred passwordless options, a significant portion still relied on passwords. This customer-centric approach allowed them to broaden their market appeal and serve a wider range of clients.
Launch Stage
Targeting Early Adopters in Fintech and Crypto
Stitch's initial target customers were fintech and crypto companies, which often face unique authentication challenges due to the high stakes of financial transactions. They focused on these sectors because they understood the pain points from their previous experiences at Plaid. By leveraging their insights into the needs of these industries, they were able to tailor their product offerings to meet the specific demands of early adopters, leading to significant early traction.
Self-Serve Dashboard Experience
Stitch prioritized building a self-serve experience for their product, allowing users to log into a dashboard, obtain API keys, and try out the product without needing to interact with a sales representative. This approach was part of their initial beta product launch, which included email magic links and a user-friendly dashboard. The self-serve model facilitated rapid user onboarding and engagement, leading to early customer sign-ups primarily through word of mouth on platforms like Twitter and LinkedIn.
