Motivation to build the product
The founders were motivated by the need to improve email efficiency and user experience, particularly for businesses that rely heavily on email for customer interactions and internal messaging. They recognized the challenges users faced in managing their email effectively and sought to create a solution that would address these issues.Problem that their product solves
Polymail solves the problem of inefficient email management for businesses, particularly in tracking communications and understanding user needs. The end users are small businesses and consumers who require a more effective way to manage their email interactions. Solving this problem is important as it enhances productivity and communication, which are critical for business success.Their unfair advantage
Polymail's unfair advantage lies in its focus on user experience and continuous customer feedback, allowing it to iterate and improve its product based on real user insights.Strategies
Pre-Launch (Product Development & MVP)
YC Fellowship Application
Brandon Fu and his co-founders applied to the Y Combinator Fellowship program before they had built anything for Polymail. They sought a grant of $112,000 without giving up equity, which was a new initiative by YC at the time. Although they were initially rejected, this application process helped them refine their idea and prepare for their eventual acceptance into the summer program after building a prototype.
User Engagement through Feedback
In the early stages of GitLab, the team focused on engaging with users on platforms like Hacker News to gather feedback. They actively listened to user needs and concerns, which helped them refine their product. This approach allowed them to identify what users wanted and adjust their offerings accordingly, creating a product that resonated with their audience.
User Feedback Integration
Brandon Foo, the CEO and Co-founder of Polymail, emphasized the importance of incorporating user feedback throughout the product development lifecycle. They launched the first alpha prototype of Polymail on Product Hunt to gather real user feedback immediately. This approach allowed them to iterate quickly based on user input, which was crucial for building a loyal user base. They created a user-engineer feedback Slack group, conducted email surveys, and held user interview calls to ensure they were aligned with market needs.
Launch Stage
Product Hunt Launch
Polymail launched on Product Hunt while still in private beta, where it became the number three most upvoted product of all time, garnering around 4,500 upvotes. This exposure led to significant traction and recognition, including winning the Mac App of the Year award, which helped establish a strong user base and community support.
Simplifying Installation Process
To facilitate user adoption, GitLab prioritized making the installation process as seamless as possible. They dedicated a team to streamline the installation experience, ensuring that users could set up the product without significant hurdles. This included addressing common concerns about transferring settings from existing platforms and minimizing the need for repeated password entries.
