Company business details

Problem that their product solves

Mindstone addresses the problem of information overload and the challenge of accessing quality educational content. The end users are individuals seeking to enhance their learning and job prospects by organizing and engaging with various online resources. Solving this problem is important as it helps users learn more effectively and improves their employability.

Their unfair advantage

Mindstone's unfair advantage lies in its user-generated content model, which fosters a community of learners and educators, making learning more accessible and personalized.

Strategies

Pre-Launch (Product Development & MVP)

User-Centric Feature Development

Mindstone focused on understanding user needs through extensive user testing. They discovered that many users had an 'information graveyard' where they stored content they intended to revisit but never did. To address this, they implemented features that automatically generate summaries of saved content, helping users quickly assess its relevance. This approach not only aids in decluttering their saved content but also encourages users to engage with only the most pertinent information.

Addressing FOMO

Mindstone tackled the common issue of FOMO (fear of missing out) by helping users realize that it's okay not to engage with every piece of content they encounter. They designed the platform to automatically summarize content, allowing users to discard less relevant information without guilt. This strategy was aimed at reducing the overwhelming feeling users often experience when faced with too much information.

Incorporating Learning Science

Mindstone integrated proven learning techniques into their platform, such as spaced repetition and recall. They designed the app to automatically place highlighted content into a spaced repetition algorithm, enhancing users' ability to retain information. This approach is based on established research that shows spaced exposure to information significantly improves retention, making learning more effective for users.

Pivoting Based on User Feedback

Mindstone underwent a strategic pivot after realizing that their initial idea of allowing users to create playlists of content (courses) required a critical mass of users to be effective. Instead, they shifted focus to providing tools that help individual users manage their information overload. This pivot was informed by user feedback and aimed at creating a more immediate value for users before revisiting the playlist feature in the future.

Targeting Different User Segments

Mindstone identified two distinct user segments: 'Mastery Athletes' who are self-directed and aware of their content diet, and 'Curious Learners' who seek to optimize their information intake but lack direction. They decided to focus on the latter group, developing features that guide these users in managing their information overload. This strategic targeting aims to enhance user engagement and satisfaction.

Freemium Model Planning

Mindstone is planning to adopt a freemium model to monetize their platform. This decision aligns with their goal of building a user-centric platform that prioritizes individual learning outcomes. By offering a free version with premium features, they aim to attract a broad user base while ensuring that their revenue model is aligned with the needs of their users.

Initial User Acquisition through Networking

Joshua Wöhle leveraged his existing connections from previous ventures to find the first users for Mindstone. He tapped into various founder communities where individuals were eager to learn from curated online content. This approach allowed him to build an initial user base without extensive marketing efforts, relying instead on personal relationships and the shared interests of fellow founders.

Google AdWords for Testing

To refine Mindstone's messaging and positioning, Joshua implemented a simple Google AdWords campaign. This strategy enabled him to test different value propositions and optimize the landing page based on user responses. By analyzing the performance of various ads, he was able to identify the most effective messaging that resonated with potential users, ensuring that the platform's offerings were clearly communicated.

User Interviews and Text Analysis

Joshua conducted over 300 user interviews, primarily via Zoom, to gather insights about how potential users described their learning needs. He utilized a text analysis engine on the transcripts to extract common language and terminology used by users. By incorporating these user-generated terms into Mindstone's landing page, he achieved a conversion rate that was more than ten times higher than previous attempts, demonstrating the power of aligning messaging with user language.

Crowdfunding Campaign

In November 2021, Mindstone launched the largest edtech crowdfunding campaign on Seedrs, successfully raising $1.75 million. This campaign was led by Mustard Seed Maze and included contributions from existing investors and angel investors, including former co-founders from SuperAwesome. The campaign not only provided essential funding but also helped to build a community of supporters and early adopters who were invested in the platform's success.

Launch Stage

User-Centric Learning Platform Development

Mindstone was developed with a focus on creating a user-centric learning experience. The platform allows users to save time by optimizing their information diet, enabling them to organize, share, and annotate various online content such as web pages, podcasts, and videos. By employing scientifically proven learning methods like spaced repetition, Mindstone aims to enhance the learning process and provide a tailored experience for each user.

Growth Stage

Investment from Notable Investors

In early 2021, Mindstone secured $2.2 million in funding from prominent investors including Moonfire Ventures and The Fund. This initial funding was crucial for the company's growth, allowing them to further develop their platform and expand their reach in the edtech market. The involvement of well-known investors also added credibility to Mindstone, attracting more attention from potential users and partners.

Maturity & Scaling

Building a Community of Learners

Mindstone aims to create a community around self-directed learning, envisioning a world where anyone can learn anything quickly and effectively. By placing the learner at the center of the educational experience, Mindstone encourages users to take control of their learning journey. This community-building approach not only enhances user engagement but also fosters a collaborative environment where learners can share insights and resources.

Saturation & Retention

Focus on Continuous Improvement

Joshua Wohle emphasizes the importance of focusing on immediate next steps and continuous improvement in the product. By encouraging the team to concentrate on enhancing the platform week by week, Mindstone aims to adapt quickly to user feedback and changing market demands. This strategy helps maintain user satisfaction and retention, ensuring that the platform evolves alongside its users' needs.
