Side Project Development
Leah Culver and her cofounder Erik Michaels-Ober worked on Breaker as a side project for about nine months while still employed at their respective jobs. They dedicated their Sundays to iterating on the product, gathering user feedback, and developing a prototype before fully committing to the startup. This approach allowed them to explore the podcasting space without the immediate pressure of quitting their jobs, which ultimately led to a more informed decision to pursue the startup full-time.
User-Centric Pivoting
Initially, Leah and Erik aimed to build tools for podcasters, but after engaging with potential users, they discovered that podcasters were more interested in gaining listeners and understanding their audience. This insight prompted them to pivot their focus towards developing a user app first, which was a significant shift in strategy. This change was made easier by the fact that they had not yet quit their jobs, allowing them to adapt without the stress of financial instability.
Collaborative Ideation
Leah Culver, along with her co-founders Kevin Rose and Daniel Burka, engaged in a collaborative ideation process to develop Pownce. They combined their individual interests—Kevin's focus on file sharing, Leah's interest in social connectivity, and Daniel's design expertise—to create a platform that allowed users to share not just text, but also photos and audio snippets. This approach ensured that the product was well-rounded and addressed multiple user needs right from the start.

Breaker, co-founded by Eric Berlin and Leah Culver, introduced innovative social features to enhance podcast discovery. Leveraging Y Combinator Network
Leah decided to participate in Y Combinator (YC) for a second time, motivated by her cofounder Erik's desire to experience the program. She valued the resources and support provided by YC, including access to group partners who offered guidance and mentorship. This decision was strategic, as she believed that having YC as part of their journey would contribute to their future success, demonstrating the importance of leveraging established networks in the startup ecosystem.
